• Prior to arriving in Denver, Steve Gartin had traveled in every Western State, traversed the high seas from the South Pole to the North Pole and ridden a motorcycle down the Alcan Highway before it was paved to Florida in 1970.  As a pre-med student, he joined the United States Coast Guard for medic duty in Viet Nam; but ended up as a RadioMan in Alaska and finished the four year enlistment in Galveston, Texas.

• Commenced study with the de Thouars Brothers in silat and kuntao in 1976.

• Steve Gartin founded the Denver Auto Trader in 1977.
